A medical cyclotron facility is being established in Kolkata by Department of Atomic Energy, which will mainly be used for the production of radioisotopes for diagnostic imaging in SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography) and in PET (Positron Emission Tomography) besides applications in many front line research areas, like material science, radiochemistry, liquid metal target development, etc.

Table below shows the cyclotron produced SPECT radioisotopes and some of their applications.

In addition to these the cyclotron can also be used to produce 103Pd, which is used in prostrate cancer therapy.

The cyclotron will produce up to 500 μA proton beam with 15-30 MeV energy. Keeping in mind the very high demand of radioisotopes and multiple use of the cyclotron, a very unique technical feature has been adopted in this cyclotron. It will accelerate negative Hydrogen ions to high energy and then strip off their additional electrons with the help of carbon foil. By partial interception of the beam with the foil, two simultaneous beams can be extracted from two opposite sides of the cyclotron. Thus the cyclotron ON-time will be shared by two beam-lines at a time used for radioisotope production and/or Research. The facility will have five beam lines – two on one side and three on the other side. One beam line will be dedicated for PET isotope production, two will be dedicated for SPECT isotope production and remaining two will be used for R&D in material science and liquid metal target development studies. The facility is scheduled to be commissioned around the end of 2008.
